Rainbows, Brownies and Guides Celebrate Thinking Day

Units throughout Wraxall Division have been very busy celebrating Thinking Day. Thinking Day is on 22nd February every year and a time that we think about and celebrate being members of WAGGGS (World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts) and about other members around the world.

1st Nailsea Rainbows, 3rd Nailsea Rainbows, 1st Clevedon West Guides and 6th Clevedon West Guides completed the WAGGGS challenge for Thinking Day based on the theme this year of peace and peacebuilding. The Rainbow units joined together in a joint zoom meeting to make glitter jars to help show our emotions and thought about things we do to be calm. They also thought about how they feel in different situations and came up with some ideas of different good turns and drew a picture of a good turn. The Guide units also joined together for a joint zoom meeting where they learnt about some inspirational women and the Nobel Peace Prize. All the units also talked about the promise and renewed it, thinking of different ways to keep their Girlguiding promise and other countries with Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in and their promises.

3rd Nailsea Rainbows, 1st Nailsea Brownies, 1st Long Ashton Brownies, 1st Nailsea Guides, 6th Nailsea Guides, 1st Cleeve Guides and a couple of girls from other units all took part in the Girlguiding South West Region virtual sleepover at the weekend for Thinking Day. It was a brilliant busy weekend travelling all around the world with WAGGGS to the 5 World Centres and their countries from the comfort of our own homes. In total, 7 Rainbows, 15 Brownies and 37 Guides and a few leaders took part from Wraxall Division. We started off watching the opening ceremony followed by visiting Our Chalet in Switzerland, Sangam in India, Kusafiri in Africa, Our Cabana in Mexico on the Saturday finishing off with campfire songs, a special bedtime story and hearing from members who had travelled abroad with Girlguiding. The Sunday started with a sunrise promise renewal, some active activities to start the day, visit Pax Lodge in London and the closing ceremony. There were lots of activities to choose from with a variety of crafts, food based ones and active activities. Each world centre also included a video about it and there were quizes and wordsearches too. Some girls even put up tents and made their own dens to sleep in.

In Switzerland, the girls made 3D chalets, alpine hats, movable skiers and scherenschnitte. They also could make yummy swiss pancakes and butterzopf along with decorating a kuhglocke and playing swedish kubb. In India, they could make their own henna hands, rangoli patterns, peacocks, garlands using popcorn and warli art. There was also bollywood dancing and making banana chapatis along with tea tasting and playing some traditional games. In Africa, girls could make their own rainstick, elephants using milk bottles and animals using their hands. They could also have a go at kente weaving, african dancing and making vanilla biscuits. In Mexico, they could decorate mexican paper dolls, learn about Dia de los Muertos, make sombrero hat biscuits and pinata cakes. There was also making some cactus bunting and mexican god eyes as well as paper picado and playing some traditional games. For the rise and shine activities to get started on the sunday, they could chose to do some yoga and different dances to get ready for the day. In London, girls could make their own London underground train, make a guardsman, enjoy afternoon tea and build a bridge using spaghetti and marshmellows. There was also embroidering their own London eye, creating their own monopoly board and making peace doves. Many girls taking part also toasted marshmellows for the campfire too. So many things to do and so much fun. It was a brilliant way for our members to learn about girlguiding in the wider world and the opportunites they could have, it inspired many.
