A term full of fun and adventures for Nailsea, Clevedon and Long Ashton

It has been a very busy term for units in Wraxall Division so far this term with lots to look forward to. Lots of badges have been completed along with lots of Bronze and Silver Awards presented. All the units are looking forward to their Christmas activities coming up.

Mendip Activity Centre has been a popular place for our Girlguiding units. 3rd Nailsea Rainbows, 9th Nailsea Brownies, 10th Clevedon Brownies, 3rd Clevedon Brownies have all enjoyed tobogganing there; with 5th Nailsea Brownies going soon too. 3rd Nailsea Rainbows also enjoyed the bushcraft session at the Activity Centre, where the Rainbows learnt how to use a flint and steel to light a fire, what a fire needs and how to stay safe around fire, and of course roasting marshmallows and hot chocolate.

Remembrance Day has been a theme of several activities in units and districts lately – 1st Clevedon West Guides painted rocks with poppies which have been placed in various locations around Clevedon. Our districts Clevedon West, Clevedon East and Nailsea were represented at Clevedon and Nailsea Remembrance Parades by 14th Clevedon Guides, 1st Clevedon West Guides, 6th Clevedon West Guides, 1st Nailsea Guides, 6th Nailsea Guides and 5th Nailsea Brownies along with several leaders.

Units are also getting back into overnights too. 1st Nailsea Brownies enjoyed a Christmas themed sleepover whilst 9th Nailsea Brownies went on pack holiday to Deer Park. The theme was ‘Whatever the Weather’ and everybody had an amazing time enjoying a variety of activities – zip wiring, baking rainbow cupcakes, watching Strictly on the big projector screen plus waking up Little Owl and Tawny Owl with the help of pots and pans. 3rd Nailsea Rainbows also thoroughly enjoyed their first sleepover since the pandemic with a jungle theme. The Rainbows were very busy making sloths, a paper chain python, learnt a dance routine to an animal themed song making a clay porcupine, a jungle sing song amongst lots of other activities and hot chocolate and s’mores. 1st Clevedon West Guides are looking forward to their Christmas sleepover soon too.

The Rainbow units in the Division have been very busy. 1st Clevedon East Rainbows have been working on the theme Skills For My Future by becoming safety superheroes, preparing fruit safely, making fruit skewers and exploring potions and the Promise. The Rainbows enjoyed a Halloween themed evening and five new members make their promise using their new promise ceremony rainbow. 3rd Nailsea Rainbows have completed the First Aid Stage 2 badge thanks to a visit from St Johns Ambulance volunteers from Backwell – the Rainbows were taught and able to practise DR ABC, how to put someone in recovery position and what to do, how to check if someone is breathing and what number to call (999) and what they need to say along with having a go at bandaging. 1st Long Ashton Rainbows have been getting into the spirit of Autumn and have been making hedgehog collages using leaves they collected.

Brownie units have been doing a variety of things this term so far. 13th Clevedon Brownies had a visit from Noah’s Ark and got up and close and personal with a hissing cockroach, leopard tortoise, giant African land snail and a royal python. 3rd Clevedon Brownies joined 13th Clevedon Brownies for a trip to their local panto whilst 3rd also made glow in the dark slime, had a mini-figure fling contest and a bubble night. 1st Nailsea Brownies had their own adventure to Weston-Super-Mare to see the SEE Monster at the old Tropicana. The unit travelled there by train from Nailsea and Backwell to Weston and home by train too. At the SEE Monster, the Brownies were able to climb almost to the top and explored the structure including the cloud making deck. 9th Nailsea Brownies have been learning about some local history in the form of the Nailsea glassworks, building robots and having a Halloween party. 5th Nailsea Brownies have been working on their Be Well Theme Award and, at the start of the term, reflected on the Queens service to the country and Girlguiding with everybody renewing their Promise to the Queen for the last time. The Brownies enjoyed a team sports day and football skills with Mr Snowy Owl, along with yoga with Jodie. They also went on an autumn walk, making leaf fairies and water filters. 5th Nailsea Brownies also borrowed the rocket launcher box from SS Great Britain and they made rockets; the loved seeing how high they could fly. The unit also faced a challenge of a wet night but did manage to make s’mores and do sparklers despite that. They enjoyed a fantastic evening African drumming on the Djembe Drums with Tigger too. 10th Nailsea Brownies have been doing their bit for Albania, raising money by doing jobs at home to buy items to fill shoeboxes that will be sent to Albania, complete with Christmas cards in. The Brownie unit was able to fill 16 boxes. The Brownies also made spiders with web and costumes using black sacks covered with leaves and glow sticks along with making s’more cooked over tealights and hot chocolate.

1st Nailsea Guides and 6th Nailsea Guides have been working on the Dreams badge with sweet dreams and world dreams. They also remembered the Queen and what she meant to us; making a ‘doodle’ and a collage along with time of silence. The Guide units also enjoyed sparklers, hot dogs and games in the dark for bonfire night.
