Zoe’s Austrian Adventure

A member of Girlguiding from Long Ashton had an exciting opportunity to go to Austria with Girlguiding’s region international programme GirlGuiding South West England INTOPS with other members all around the region. In the run up to to it, Zoe had to attend briefing weekends and practised walking with a full backpack.

Another part of the INTOPS trips are that the girls going are expected to raise the money themselves. Zoe had the challenge of raising £1455! She wrote to local charitable organisations, such as the Rotary Club, Trefoil Guild, Girlguiding Wraxall Division, Lions Club, who happily donated some money to her for the trip. She also did a lot of fundraising by doing a sponsored swim, organised a local toy sale and made and sold cakes to small businesses in her local area.

Zoe has written about how her Austrian Adventure went:

‘In the Summer, I went on an ‘Austrian Adventure’ with 15 other girls and 4 leaders from Girlguiding South West England. I had an awesome time filled with many amazing opportunities, lots of fun and I made many new friends that I will keep for life.

The trip started with 4 days in Salzburg, where we swam in the rain, ate some great food and did some sightseeing. We had a packed itinerary which involved our own take on a Sound of Music tour, shopping trips to ‘Billa’ (an Austrian supermarket) and we used many modes of transport including a cable car and a funicular railway!

We then made our way to the international scout and guide jamboree ‘Together 2023’ in Upper Austria. There we were paired with a Scout Unit from Linz who helped us set up shelters, tents and cook Austrian dishes. Camp had many activities for us to take part in, including swimming in a river, swapping badges, campfires and concerts! We all had a fabulous time. We had great weather most of the time but when it did rain, we didn’t let it dampen our spirits! The time at camp went by so quickly.

At the end of camp we were off on our travels again. We got the train to Vienna and we ate that night at the world famous giant schnitzel restaurant – Figlmuller! We took a lovely walk through Vienna after dinner and we stopped off at an ice cream shop! The next day we headed into the city for a bit of last minute shopping before hopping on a sightseeing bus. We then made our way to the airport and hopped on our flight back home.

It was very sad saying goodbye but we are all going to stay in contact and hopefully have a reunion next year. I wrote this summary to say thank you for supporting me on this trip. You were all very generous with your donations and cake buying and it wouldn’t have happened without you.

Thank You!! Zoe’
